Laminated safety glass, of course, is a type of glass commonly used in doors and windows but with many other applications. Contractors, builders, and others in the wholesale market come to us when they’re searching for the best prices and greatest supply options for laminated safety glass. Safety glass, of course, is critically important here in Florida, what with our risk of hurricanes and inclement weather. For these reasons, laminated safety glass is often the glass of choice. As the #1 laminated safety glass manufacturer in Florida, we receive many calls for it, from Miami to Jacksonville, Tampa to Orlando and everywhere in between.

Laminated safety glass comes in all shapes, sizes, and qualities. The manufacturing process typically involves using polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), between its two or more layers of glass. This interlayer helps to keep the layers of glass bonded even when it may be broken, and the high strength impedes the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces. This produces a characteristic “spider web” cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass. (You may have seen this on car windows after a car crash). In the case of the EVA, the thermoset EVA, offers a complete bounding (cross-linking) with the material whether it is glass, polycarbonate, PET, or other types of products.

Laminated Safety Glass: Factoid
In 1927, the Canadian chemists Howard W. Matheson and Frederick W. Skirrow invented the plastic polyvinyl butyral (PVB). By 1936, United States companies had discovered that laminated “safety glass” consisting of a layer of polyvinyl butyral between two layers of glass would not discolor and was not easily penetrated during accidents. Within five years, the new safety glass had virtually replaced its predecessor. Then, in the Road Traffic Act of 1930, the British parliament required new cars to use windscreens of “safety glass”.
